Spring at Thorp Perrow

Daffodil Trail at Thorp Perrow

Snowdrops at Thorp Perrow

The first signs of Spring have emerged at Thorp Perrow Arboretum with a blanket of snowdrops currently covering large parts of the woodland floor.

Next to flower are the Daffodils with at least 110 different varieties on show, quickly followed by the blooming of the beautiful Blossom and carpet of Bluebells.

During Spring, Thorp Perrow has an array of different flowering plants that bloom alongside the fantastic Cherry Blossom and wonderful Magnolias. The vibrant Forsythia gives an early burst of warming yellow, the Cornus mas springs to life and various different Rhododendrons start to show off their magnificent colour!

Along with the Arboretum giving beautiful natural Spring bulb trails, the Easter bunny is set to hop through the woodland leaving clues as he goes ready for children to follow the trail and solve the puzzle. There will also be spring and Easter craft days to keep the kids busy and spark their creativity.

After those long, dark, and damp days it’s great to have some Spring cheer in the air. Be sure to collect one of the free spring flower trail maps and follow the suggested walks around the Arboretum to see the best of the collections and learn fascinating facts and care tips.

Daffodils and Monument at Thorp Perrow

There’s much to do during Spring in the Arboretum, much of our pruning is completed in preparation for the coming growing season. Mowing will begin on our many grassy areas and the never ending weeds start to appear, keep our grounds team and wonderful volunteers rather busy.

Spring came early in the Bird of Prey centre and pairs where showing signs of breeding early into the year. We have a new pair of breeding Steepe Eagles which we imported from Denmark. They have settled well into one of our brand new aviaries and we hope they might breed this year. The Meerkat enclosure is currently undergoing a revamp, we are ahead of schedule on this so we will be able to welcome back the Meerkat mob sometime in March. We also have two new falcons in the flying displays and a new, and very cute, barn owl. All the old favourites will be back of course and the three full displays will start back on the 16th of Feb. The staff and birds all look forward to seeing you again in the spring .

Some fun Spring facts –

  • The word ‘season’ is from the Latin word ‘sationem’ which means ‘sowing’ or ‘seed time’.
  • The first day of Spring is called the vernal equinox. The term ‘vernal’ is Latin for ‘Spring’ and ‘equinox’ is Latin for ‘equal night’.
  • In Spring the Earth’s axis is tilted toward the sun, this increases the number of daylight hours and brings with it warmer weather that causes plants to bring forth new growth.
  • Spring is often associated with rebirth, renewal and regrowth.
  • During the Spring, Birds are more vocal as they sing to attract mates and warn away rivals.

We’ve got plenty of events lined up to celebrate Spring: Lunch in the House with a fascinating talk by Peter Fiennes; a spring guided tour with our Curator, Faith; our ever-popular Easter Trail and Craft Days for the kids. Be sure to check out all of great events in the diary page.
